Today's Wordle hints
Climb the ladder from the gentlest nudge to the strongest hint. No peeking at the next clue until you've given the current one a real try.
Clue 1Gentle nudge
Think big: it describes what matters most, the thing that outweighs everything else around it.
Clue 2Warming up
College flashback: it is also the name for your main field of study, the one on your degree.
Clue 3Getting warmer
Rank check: it names a military officer who sits right between captain and lieutenant colonel.
Clue 4Almost there
Letter pattern: it starts with M and ends with R, and no letter repeats.
Clue 5Strongest hint
Almost there: M A J _ _. Say it out loud and the last two letters will come to you.

MAJOR
What does today's Wordle answer mean?
Reveal the meanings (contains spoilers)
It means important, serious, or greater in size, rank, or importance. You will meet it in three very different places: a college major (your main field of study), a military rank (the officer between captain and lieutenant colonel), and music (a major scale or chord built around a home note). As a puzzle, the J does all the work. It is an uncommon letter that most openers never test, so solvers who burn early guesses on the usual vowels and consonants can circle this word for a while before the middle letter clicks.
How hard is today's Wordle?
Difficulty: Easy
Openers like CRANE, SLATE, or TRACE will likely confirm the A and the R but almost certainly miss the J. That middle letter is the whole puzzle: J is rare enough that most players never try it early. If your grid shows a frame like M A _ O R, stop cycling through common consonants and ask which uncommon letters could fit the gap. J, X, Z, and Q are the usual suspects on days like this, and today it is the first one.

How do you play Wordle?
- You get six guesses to find a five-letter word. Type any valid five-letter English word and hit enter to submit it.
- Green means the letter is in the word and in the right spot. Lock those letters in and build your next guesses around them.
- Yellow means the letter is in the word but in the wrong spot. Move it somewhere new on your next guess.
- Gray means the letter is not in the word at all. Cross those letters off and don't spend another guess on them.
- Everyone gets the same Wordle of the day, and it resets at midnight. If you run out of guesses, you'll have to wait for tomorrow's word.
What are the best Wordle strategies?
- Open with common letters: pick a starter packed with everyday vowels and consonants like A, E, R, S, and T so your first guess covers the most ground.
- Never replay a gray: once a letter comes back gray it's out for good, so don't waste a guess on a word that uses it again.
- Move your yellows: a yellow letter is a confirmed hit, so shuffle it into a new position instead of guessing fresh letters blindly.
- Think before you burn guesses: when you already have two or three greens, pause and brainstorm matching words in your head rather than throwing in random tries.
- Play by hard mode rules even with it off: always reposition your yellows and never reuse grays, since that discipline alone wins most days.
What is Wordle?
Wordle was created by Josh Wardle, a software engineer who built the Wordle game in 2021 as a personal gift for his partner, who loved word games. He released it to the public that October, and it spread almost entirely by word of mouth, with players sharing their little grids of colored squares on social media.
The New York Times bought Wordle in early 2022, and the Wordle New York Times puzzle has kept the same format ever since: one puzzle a day, the same word for everyone, which turned it into a shared daily ritual and a friendly competition among friends, families, and coworkers.

Frequently asked questions
What time does Wordle reset?
Wordle resets at midnight in your local time zone. Everyone in the world gets the same daily word.
What do the green, yellow, and gray tiles mean?
Green means the letter is correct and in the right spot. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in the wrong spot. Gray means the letter is not in the answer (or you used it more times than it appears).
Can I play yesterday's Wordle?
The official game only offers the current day's puzzle. Our archive section below lists recent answers so you can look back at past solutions.
Does Wordle have a hard mode?
Yes. In hard mode, any revealed green or yellow letters must be reused in your subsequent guesses.
Is Wordle free to play?
Yes. The daily Wordle puzzle is free on the New York Times website and in the NYT Games app, and you don't need a subscription to play it. Just open the page, make your six guesses, and come back tomorrow for a fresh word.
